Book Preservation
Although many historic events have been recorded on film, videotape, and other media, most of our heritage is preserved on written records, and conservators work very hard to ensure that those records retain their permanency for future generations.
The best book preservation measure individuals and institutions can take is to store their valued materials in a controlled environment. The Library of Congress and others recommend keeping records away from sun exposure and fluorescent lighting. Temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees and a moderate relative humidity of 40% to 50% will significantly reduce the rate of deterioration.
Proper Storage and Handling
Water and fireproof storage areas, as well as paper deacidification, also contribute to long-term protection. Furthermore, damage and deterioration can be prevented if materials are handled carefully and stored in special book preservation boxes. Large, heavy books should be stored flat on their back covers. Inexpensive folders can effectively prolong the life of fragile documents and photographs.
“I love books. They are a link to the past and heirlooms for the future. As a conservator and restorer, I protect the printed work from the ravages of time. There is a sense of immortality in that one’s work will outlive oneself.”
“Books are the memory of a culture. Everything we know about the past, except through archaeology, we know through books.”
– James E. Twomey
Document Restoration
The restoration of aged, damaged, or deteriorated books and documents requires a combination of old-world craftsmanship and modern techniques executed by hand carefully, patiently, and, yes, lovingly. That union of the traditional and the contemporary is a hallmark of the Book Restoration Co. under the direction of James E. Twomey, who continues a family tradition of book and document restoration that began with his grandfather in 1943.
Whether they are treasured family Bibles, letters, or rare and antiquarian books in public or private collections, environmental conditions and years of usage combine to cause the internal deterioration and visible damage that endanger our recorded heritage. Fortunately, a qualified conservator, such as Mr. Twomey and his staff, can restore most books and documents.
Dedicated to Book Preservation and Restoration
The art of bookbinding has only recently been combined with conservation science. As a craft, it has changed little over the centuries. The methods are virtually the same as those used by 15th-century monks. The finest books were handcrafted then and continue to be passed from generation to generation. However, there has been much improvement in materials. Moreover, our understanding of how the environment affects bindings and paper also has grown.
When you bring your valued papers and volumes to Mr. Twomey, you can be confident that his skills will be applied conscientiously and dedicatedly. All materials will be genuine, and all workmanship is unconditionally guaranteed. Prices range from $275 to $800.
